Self-switching of unidirectional distributively coupled waves of orthogonal polarizations
Abstract
Amplitude equations for systems with unidirectional distributively coupled orthogonally polarized waves are derived in a general and systematic manner, and the characteristics of such systems are examined from the standpoint of optical transistor and switch implementations. It is shown, in particular, that, by gradually varying the rotation angle of the optical axis of the specimen relative to one of the mutually perpendicular axes of cross polarizers, it is possible to optimize the operation of a self-switch for a given problem.
