A fossil aphid (Insecta: Hemiptera) from the Early Cretaceous of southern England
Abstract
A new species of fossil aphid, Penaphis woollardi sp. nov. (Aphidoidea: Callaphididae?) is described from the Weald Clay of the English Weald (Early Cretaceous: Hauterivian). Penaphis may be the earliest member of a gymnosperm-feeding lineage including late Early Cretaceous Oviparosiphum and Recent Neophyllaphis. The synonymy of Oviparosiphum with Neophyllaphis is proposed although Penaphis is retained as a form genus because it is based solely on forewings.
