Radio Observations of a Complete Sample of Nearby Stars
Abstract
Using the VLA at 4.9 GHz, a complete radio survey of all known stars north of -28 deg, within 12 pc of the sun, produced five detections with emission greater than 1.0 mJy. All of the detections were associated with dwarf Me stars, preferentially in multiple systems. No other stellar types, including M stars, were detected. Approximately 25 percent of the stellar systems that contain an Me star have a radio luminosity greater than 0.4 x 10 to the 14th ergs/s per Hz at 4.9 GHz in their 'quasi-quiescent' state. Stars of this type will contribute less than 1 percent of the radio identifications at the 1 microJy level.
