Use of plasmas for the acceleration of particles to very high energy
Abstract
Plasma waves excited by heterodyning two laser beams are studied. The saturation level of the plasma wave assuming several mechanisms is analyzed. The destruction of the wave coherence due to the modulation instability effect is discussed. A synthesis of the conclusions is presented by giving the amplitude of the plasma wave as a function of the incident laser flux, for a set of typical experimental parameters.
