Dynamics of high-frequency Langmuir fields excited in plasma by an electromagnetic wave
Abstract
The experiments reported here were aimed at the study of the dynamics of plasma fields in the case of the interaction of a strong p-polarized electromagnetic wave with a dense collisionless plasma layer. Amplitude and phase modulations of a diagnostic electron beam passed through the plasma resonance region are discussed. In particular, it is shown that modulation is observed as short bursts, with the period between successive bursts decreasing with increasing pumping intensity. For a modulation intensity of 0.035 or greater, modulation becomes chaotic. The characteristic time of modulation decreases with the increasing pumping field.
