The theory of the interaction between a magnetic charge and material medium
Abstract
It is shown that the interaction between a moving monopole and atoms lying along its trajectory leads to renormalization of the effective charge of the monopole which defines the field at a distance from the trajectory. It is precisely this phenomenon which is the physical cause of the difference between the true response functions in monopole electrodynamics and epsilon(omega) and mu(omega). A model medium consisting of rarefied quantum oscillators is considered in which renormalization changes the magnetic charge mu(omega) times. This leads, in particular, to an additional factor mu-squared(omega) in the formula for the intensity of the Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation. A general estimate of the correction to the monopole charge is presented. It shows that the renormalization is due mainly to diamagnetic effects.
