Crystal-field effect on magnetic susceptibility of EuBa 2Cu 3O y
Abstract
Magnetic susceptibility of superconducting (orthorhombic) and of non-superconducting (tetragonal) EuBa 2Cu 3O y has been measured. Difference between the susceptibility of these two samples has been found to be small. Anisotropic susceptibility has been observed on single crystals of EuBa 2Cu 3O y. Analytical form of the susceptibility to be compared with the experimental value has been derived from energy matrix of Eu 3+ taking into account crystal-field effect and Zeeman energy. The calculated values fit very well to the observed ones. The best fit parameters are E1=390 K, E2=880 K, V2=50 K and □ V4□≈50 K where EJ is mean energy of multiplet J and Vn is tetragonal crystal-field parameter. Discussion has been given for these parameters in comparison with those in other materials.
