Accelerators of the 21st century? Laser techniques for particle acceleration in plasmas
Abstract
Preliminary research on laser techniques for particle acceleration in plasmas is reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the development of beat-wave accelerators and surfatrons, though such schemes as plasma-grating accelerators and plasma wake field accelerators are also considered. Finally, numerical studies performed at Los Alamos and experiments performed at UCLA on laser acceleration techniques are discussed.
