Non-linear oscillations of the magnetosphere around neutron stars.
Abstract
The unsteady motion of the mass reservoir formed by accretion onto the magnetosphere around rotating neutron stars is studied using a physically simplified model. The unsteady motion of the reservoir induces secondary accretion onto the neutron star by Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The nonperiodic or quasi-periodic phenomena of X-ray bursters seem to be related to this property of the mass reservoir on the magnetosphere. The typical dynamical state of the reservoir is classified into three types: non-sequential oscillation, sequential periodic oscillation, and chaotic oscillation states.
