Effect of thermal lensing on the excitation of SBS in absorbing media
Abstract
The SBS threshold is investigated experimentally with emphasis on the effect of themal lensing. It is found that thermal self-defocusing of the excitation beam in the focal constriction region is the main factor responsible for an increase in the SBS threshold and a reduction in the fraction of the Stokes wave reproducing the focused excitation beam. A universal expression is obtained which relates the SBS threshold excess and the reproduction fraction to the laser pulse energy and critical energy of thermal self-defocusing.
