Effect of inlet blockage on the pressure recovery of conical and annular diffuser
Abstract
An end wall boundary layer calculation routine has been developed to assess the effects of inlet blockage on the performance of conical and annular diffusers. One of the most difficult parts of the program was how to calculate the potential flow. An iterative procedure has been taken into consideration to simulate the velocity outside the boundary layer by a uniform repartition of the blockage effect over non-blocked area. A simplified inviscid approach is suggested as a first step toward the prediction of diffuser performance. The available experimental evidence of the effects of inlet condition on the performance of conical and annular diffusers with a free discharge is reviewed. The curves drawn on the basis of theoretically calculated values show the well known fall of pressure recovery coefficient as inlet blockage increases and vary in the sense as that of the experimented one up to the onset of flow separation.
