Aerosols and radiation budget in the middle atmosphere
Abstract
Aerosol studies in the Indian Middle Atmosphere Program are reviewed. Consideration is given to gas-to-particle conversion, the role of meteoric debris, sedimentation, coagulation, aerosol removal processes, aerosol size distributions, the aerosol continuity equation, and the latitudinal distribution of aerosol particles. Results are presented from several experimental studies, including balloon and rocket measurements, CW lidar measurements, pulsed ruby lidar observations, and spectral measurements of total extinction with multiwave radiometers. Also, the effect of aerosols on radiation in the middle atmosphere is discussed.
