The main ionospheric trough during substorms
Abstract
The characteristic features of the main ionospheric trough (MIT) during evening hours of winter and equinoctial months in magnetically disturbed conditions are investigated on the basis of ground-based and satellite data. An analysis of 11 substorms shows that the MIT development is accompanied by an intensification of particle precipitation, resulting in the appearance of a sporadic E layer and an absorption increase.
