On board multicarrier demodulation in FDMA/TDMA satellite systems
Abstract
In future satellite communication systems, regenerative repeaters will play an important role, since on-board regeneration decouples the uplink and downlink transmission formats, i.e., coding, modulation and multiplexing. In some applications, frequency division multiple access (FDMA) in the uplink may be cost effective, provided efficient techniques for on-board demodulation are available. In this paper multicarrier demodulation based on digital signal processing is investigated and it is shown that symbol clock coordination of the transmitting stations reduces the complexity of digital demodulators. Finally, it is considered multicarrier time division multiple access (TDMA) operation, in which very short bursts with virtually no preambles are transmitted.
