Neutron flux measurements in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory (GSUL) (Italy) (first part)
Abstract
A neutron detector was mounted in a movable laboratory and installed in the laboratory, where it was irradiated with an Am-Be source in order to measure the pulse height distribution of each counter. The experimental set-up included large BF3 proportional counters, polyethylene and cadmium neutron shields, electronic measuring instruments, and microprocessor data processing. The main peak (94 percent of events) originates from a reaction induced by thermal neutrons. The planning of future experiments is discussed.
