Gravimetry (Paper 7R0172)
Abstract
This report of the developments in gravimetry in the United States for the period 1983-86 was compiled from the cited published papers and from information contributed by selected individuals concerning their particular activities. The most significant development in gravity surveying during the last 4 years has been the utilization of the Global Positioning System (GPS) in all facets: land, sea and air of gravity data acquisition. Differential GPS is being used in land gravity surveys to provide accurate position and height information and carrier frequency Doppler observations are being used to accurately determine the velocity in moving base gravimetry. Using GPS, airborne gravity is now, and soon gradient measuring systems will be, able to map with ease previously inaccessible areas such as mountains, swamps and the arctic regions.
