Lepton-Kaon Correlations in B-Meson Decay.
Abstract
We have used the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) to study lepton-kaon correlations in e^ +{e}^ - annihilations at the Upsilon{rm (4S)} resonance. The charged kaons used in this study were identified using specific-ionization measurements made using the CLEO. Through a new technique, which takes advantage of charge and angular correlations between leptons and kaons in B decay at the Upsilon{rm (4S)}, we have measured the inclusive branching ratios Gamma(|{rm B} tol^-{rm K}^ -{rm X})overGamma(| {rm B}tol^-{rm X}), Gamma(|{rm B}tol^-{rm K} ^+{rm X})over Gamma( |{rm B}tol^ -{rm X}), Gamma(| {rm B}to{rm K}^ -{rm X})over Gamma(| {rm B}to{rm all}) , Gamma(|{rm B }to{rm K}^+{rm X})over Gamma(|{rm B}to{rm all}), Gamma(|{rm B}tol ^-{rm K}^0/|{ rm K}^0{rm X})over Gamma(|{rm B}tol ^-{rm X}) and Gamma( |{rm B}to{rm K }^0/|{rm K}^0 {rm X})over Gamma(| {rm B}to{rm all}) . Their values imply Gamma(b to c)/Gamma(b to all) = 0.98 +/- 0.19. The relative probability of creating ss pairs from the vacuum in B decay is found to be consistent with other measurements made with continuum {rm e}^+{rm e}^- annihilations. In addition, the kaon yield in semileptonic B decay implies copious {rm D} ^0 production. The relevance of these results to current theories and other experiments is discussed.
