A flashlamp-excited tunable laser based on the Al2O3:Ti(3+) crystal
Abstract
An implementation of a flashlamp-excited tunable Al2O3:Ti(3+) laser is described, and its lasing characteristics are reported. For an output mirror reflection of 83 percent, the maximum output power of the laser is 46 mJ for a pumping power of 140 J; the differential efficiency is 0.05 percent. The lasing threshold is 30-35 J and only slightly dependent on the transmission of the output mirror. The laser is tunable over the range from 690 to 870 nm, which approximately corresponds to the half-width of the luminescence line. Lasers of this kind are suitable for various spectroscopic applications and, particularly, for intracavity spectroscopy.
