A three-level scheme in andalusite for the 3-mm band
Abstract
Natural andalusite (Al2SiO5) with Fe(3+) ions is a promising material for the amplification of millimeter electromagnetic waves. Here, the maximum achievable inversion coefficients in the range 65-90 GHz are calculated for a three-level scheme. For a 5 x 0.8 x 0.5-cu mm specimen of Al2SiO5 with a concentration of Fe(3+) ions of 0.07 percent at 1.7 K, the imaginary part of magnetic susceptibility and the EPR line width have been measured at 0.4 and 800 MHz, respectively.
