Search for gain on the NaHg A-X excimer transition
Abstract
Using the semi-classical theory of Szudy and Baylis and the NaHg X 2Σ and A 2Π interaction potentials, we predict gain due to the NaHg A-X excimer transition when a Na + Hg mixture is sufficiently strong laser-excited on the first atomic Na resonance transition. For our experimental conditions, we calculate in such a vapour mixture at 750 K a gain in the range 0.2%-0.4% at 850 nm. Experimentally, however, we did not measure gain within our experimental accuracy (0.1%). This negative result is ascribed to excited state absorption.
