The generation of VUV radiation by the eighth-order nonlinearity in mercury vapor
Abstract
The direct generation of the neodymium-laser radiation eighth harmonic in mercury vapor is investigated experimentally. Particular attention is given to the forbidden 6S-8S transition in electrodipole, electroquadropole, and magnetodipole approximations. Estimates are presented which show that an even harmonic (eight) is generated in a centrosymmetric medium due to the radial electric field produced during the free scattering of photoelectrons from the pump radiation waist region.
