Optical measurements on the UK free-electron laser
Abstract
The data acquisition and optical diagnostic systems of the UK free-electron laser are described. The determination of these features through spontaneous emission studies of harmonic radiation in the visible and midinfrared and gain measurements made in the 10 micron wavelength region is reviewed. The most recent experiments aimed at demonstrating above-threshold operation in the presence of an injected 'seed' signal are discussed. These measurements represent the first measurements of gain in a FEL with an injected seed pulse.
