A force-free magnetic field in flows of conducting media
Abstract
Conditions for the existence of a force-free magnetic field in a laminar flow of a medium characterized by scalar conductivity are examined. It is shown that, in a uniformly conducting medium, a force-free field with a constant factor of proportionality between current density and magnetic field vectors cannot be maintained. From the induction equation, kinematic expressions are obtained which relate the magnetic field, the proportionality factor, and the hydrodynamic characteristics of the medium for the cases of constant and coordinate-dependent conductivity.
