Can Distributed Acceleration Explain the Cosmic-Ray 15N Abundance?
Abstract
The author presents a generalized solution to the equation of distributed acceleration proposed by Wandel et al. in 1987 which includes arbitrary energy dependence of fragmentation cross sections. Using reacceleration parameters compatible with the cosmic-ray B/C ratio, it is found that the 15N/O ratio is greater than in the standard model and is in agreement with observation. Consequently 15N can be regarded as a pure secondary nuclide within the distributed acceleration model and a source abundance in excess of general abundances is not required.
