Shell structure of pancakes and the absorption spectra of quasars
Abstract
The formation of the absorption lines of atomic hydrogen in the spectra of distant quasars is studied. A model is presented which describes the formation of shells of a 'pancake' formed in the adiabatic picture of the generation of the large-scale structure of the universe. It is found that the absorption lines can form 'doublets'. The equivalent widths of the corresponding lines are calculated and the physical conditions corresponding to the observed heavy-element absorption spectra are discussed.
