Applications of special sensor microwave imager (SSM/I) data
Abstract
Attention is given to the SSMI which is scheduled to fly on all future Defense Meteorological Satellite Program spacecraft (beginning in mid-1987) and the Navy remote ocean sensing system satellite. Environmental parameters to be obtained from the data are specified and applications of the data by the U.S. Air Force and Navy are discussed. The SSM/I is a seven-channel, four-frequency, linearly polarized, passive microwave radiometer. It is concluded that the acquisition and use of its data over data-sparse areas could lead to improved forecasts.
