Transverse mode coupling in short pulse free electron lasers
Abstract
Two models are presented for use in simulations of diffractive effects in free-electron lasers with large slippage parameter. Simulations using both models show significant changes in the gain vs. cavity length curves when compared with the single-mode models. This is believed to be due to coupling between the TEM(00) mode and the higher-order radial modes. Variations in several important parameters in the model were made in order to study this effect. Changes which reduce the interaction strength of the radial modes or increase the losses for the higher-order modes makes the gain curve closer to the single-mode model.
