Synchronization and routing aspects in a cluster of satellites with on-board processing
Abstract
An interesting application of the Inter-Satellite Link (ISL) concept is that of interconnecting several satellites sharing the same nominal orbital position. This configuration, the so-called 'satellites-cluster', is applicable to situations where mass and power requirements cannot be satisfied with a single satellite and the cooperation of several units must be envisaged to satisfy the system capacity requirements. This paper, after briefly dealing with cluster-related system concepts, discusses synchronization and routing solutions for a fully-digital satellites-cluster structure, including some preliminary evaluations of on-board hardware requirements.
