Structure of turbulent channel flows
Abstract
The present state of knowledge concerning the structure of turbulent channel flows is reviewed, emphasizing experimental findings. Basic equations for turbulent channel flows are presented, and some experimental results on mean flow characteristics are described. The state of knowledge of conventional turbulence characteristics is surveyed, including probability density distributions of fluctuations, intensity and Reynolds stress profiles, flow angles, and power spectra. Organized flow structures and their relation to turbulence-producing mechanisms are discussed, and a review of numerical experiments is given.
