The 'optimum' BER estimator for digital satellite communication systems
Abstract
The theoretically optimum biasing/weighting functions are derived for Importance Sampling schemes employed to estimate the bit error rate. BER, of digital communication systems. The accuracy of this estimator is discussed in terms of its normalized confidence interval. The dramatically unlimited improvement on the sample size reduction makes it the optimum BER estimator for the high performance nonlinear channels which are commonly encountered indigital communication satellites and other transmission systems.
