An investigation of spiral mode vortex breakdown with a 2-D LDV system
Abstract
A vane vortex generator with a two-dimensional LDV system is used to investigate the characteristics of spiral-mode vortex breakdown, and to clarify the relationship between the spiral and bubblelike modes. Detailed axial and swirl mean velocity profile measurements show that the mean flow field in the breakdown region is asymmetric. The locations of zero swirl velocity were found to deviate from the upstream vortex axis, while the location of the minimum axial velocity was found to remain on the vortex axis. Special attention is given to the instantaneous periodic velocity wave forms in the vortex breakdown region.
