Localization and spiking mode of ion emission from an expanding laser plasma
Abstract
Plasmas produced as a result of the pulsed laser irradiation of targets of various materials are shown to emit accelerated ions whose frequency is close to that of ion-Langmuir oscillations. This property of an expanding plasma limits the maximum resolution of transit-time mass spectrometers with a laser ion source. The presence of ion cluster indicates that the present method can be used for studying the expansion into a vacuum of plasmas produced by short laser pulses.
