Radiation color centers in gallium garnets
Abstract
An experimental study is made of the effect of gamma, UV, and electron irradiation as well as various high-temperature treatments on the absorption and luminescence spectra of gallium and calcium-gallium-germanium garnets. Some general principles governing the formation of color centers in the crystals studied are identified. The additional absorption bands in the 350 nm region observed in gallium garnets following irradiation and reduction annealing are explained from the standpoint of an F(+)-center model. The radiation-induced additional absorption bands with a maximum at 440 nm in gallium garnets are believed to be associated with hole-type center.
