Investigation of the lower D-region of the ionosphere using artificial periodic irregularities
Abstract
The paper reviews results of measurements of relaxation times of artificial periodic irregularities (API) in the lower D-region of the ionosphere. It is proposed that API appear in a standing wave field of high-power radio transmissions due to the temperature dependence of the rate of electron attachment to neutral molecules. The ratio of the number of negative ions to the number of electrons is determined from a comparison of experimental and theoretical API relaxation times. This value increases in the summer from 8-10 at a height of 55 km to 0.03 at a height of 78 km. The winter values are 5-7 times smaller than the summer values.
