Spoke-shaped irregularities and nonlinear plasma waves in the Saturn rings
Abstract
The spoke irregularities in the Saturn rings are viewed as a wave phenomenon. The model considered is that of a plane plasma layer in which quasi-electrostatic waves, inducing periodic changes in density and charge, can propagate. The case where the waves are considered to be nonlinear is analyzed, and the solution obtained describes a wave packet consisting of several spokes, the packet motion being almost synchronous with the planetary rotation (as noted in Voyager observations).
