Geodetic, geometric and computational aspects of Hipparcos
Abstract
Links between the Hipparcos mission and geodesy are identified, and the geodetic impact of the Hipparcos results on the unification of reference systems is discussed. The possibility that Hipparcos results could stop the trend toward replacing the use of astronomical techniques in geodetic and geodynamical work with other methods is considered. Geometric aspects of the data reduction process are addressed, including the three-step procedure of Lindegren (1979), estimability on the sphere, proper motions, and parallaxes. Computational aspects of reduction on circles are discussed.
