Measurements of low-frequency electric and magnetic fields in the neighbourhood of comets.
Abstract
A technique for spacecraft-based wave measurement near a comet is developed. The frequency band of the ELF-VLF waves generated near the comet, the generation mechanism, and the probable locations of the wave fields in the cometary ionosphere are considered. When the spacecraft and comet attain a high relative velocity, an important role is played by electromagnetic effects arising from the interaction between the spacecraft and the cometary plasma. The magnetic field disturbance near the spacecraft is estimated as well as the induced electric field and the probe noise.
