On a Technique for Inferring Sizes of Stellar Active Regions
Abstract
Our preliminary results indicate that sunspots lead associated plages by an amount that is directly proportional to the plage area. Our next step will be to digitize a series of spectroheliograms to better calibrate this relation. We also plan to examine other solar data sets as proxies for spot and plage signals to better determine whether a phase lag is measureable from stellar-like observations of the Sun, and thus, whether suitable observations of solar-type stars could yield information concerning areas of stellar active regions.
