Mode conversion with geometric optics in anisotropic media
Abstract
The basic equations of geometric optics are derived for multimodal wave fields and are specialized to cold magnetoplasmas as an example. Transport equations for amplitudes are derived and discussed. A coupled set of transport equations is established for coalescing modes in a conversion region, generalizing the methods of Lewis (1965) for isotropic media and Nave and Gibbons (1983) near boundaries between anisotropic and isotropic media.
