Monte Carlo modeling of the Tien-Shan effect
Abstract
The Monte Carlo modeling of the energy dependence of the mean free path for the energy absorption of the EAS hadron component is considered with reference to the Tien-Shan ionization calorimeter. This modeling approach accounts for the characteristics of the detector, particularly the variable linear density of the absorber, which is especially important in connection with unstable particles in the cascade. Unstable particles carrying away most of the interacting-hadron energy are generated in the interaction of hadrons at energies above 10 TeV with lead-atom nuclei with cross sections reaching 40 percent of the inelastic cross section. The generation of these particles leads to an irregular energy dependence of the mean free path for the energy absorption of the EAS hadron component. This is the so-called Tien-Shan effect.
