Internal optical bistability in the presence of light-induced structural phase transition in a nematic liquid crystal
Abstract
The observation of hysteresis in the case of the light-induced threshold reorientation of a nematic liquid crystal in the presence of a magnetostatic field is reported. A smooth transition between phase transitions of the second and first kind through a tricritical point was experimentally achieved. In addition, the possibility of a time-oscillatory reorientation regime in the given experimental geometry is examined.
