A closed-form expression for apodization loss
Abstract
It is well known that an apodized SAW transducer (both bidirectional and unidirectional) generates a nonuniform acoustic wavefront; this fact produces an increment of the overall attenuation between the electric ports of transmitting and receiving transducers (the latter assumed with uniform overlap), on the order of 1 dB, depending on the apodization curve. An expression for the apodization loss as a function of the normalized sequence of the overlap of an apodized transducer is computed through a circuit model of the SAW device. It is also demonstrated that the proposed expression can be obtained from the theoretical analysis of Waldron on nonuniformly irradiated transducers.
