Method for determining atmospheric temperature profiles from observations of the astronomical refraction of stars

Theoretical and experimental results are presented concerning the determination of vertical temperature profiles from refraction measurements in the case of ground-based observations of stars at positive elevation angles. Experimental data show that the accuracy of the refraction measurements, the accuracy of the calculation of the appropriate integral-equation kernel, and the spherically symmetric appproximation to the real atmosphere are all satisfactory.
