Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) signal models for Sarsat
Abstract
For three Emergency Locator Translator (ELT) signal generation models for Sarsat, resulting spectra are computed and compared with those of actual signals. The Ideal Coherent Model ELT produces an idealized spectrum which does not exist in practice. The Non-Ideal Coherent Model ELT simulation, which produces a wide range of spectra closely related to actual ELT signals, predicts a design hazard, and suggests a new mandatory design specification. This hazard arises due to an interaction between the modulation and the short-term frequency instability of the carrier oscillator. The Non-Coherent Model demonstrates the degradation caused by not providing continuous operation of the ELT carrier oscillator.
