A comparative assessment of millimeter-wave subharmonically pumped and fundamentally pumped balanced mixers
Abstract
Numerical comparisons are made between the construction complexity, noise suppression and the conductance matrix of fundamentally and subharmonically pumped balanced mm-wavelength mixers. Mixer circuitry is discussed in terms of the two types of balanced mixer, the linear oscillator (LO) frequency and power, and the LO noise effect on the IF output. Attention is also given to the conductance matrix for LO and RF power inputs fed into the two mixer diodes. Techniques are reviewed for generating a conductance matrix for modelling the conversion loss, output and input impedances. Finally, test data are provided for the performance of 183 Ghz balanced mixers.
