Color center lasers - A brief review
Abstract
Advances in the field of tunable-color-center lasers are reviewed. The lasers cover a large tuning range in the near infrared and are based on ordinary F center combined with defects in an alkali halide host. The basic characteristics of the laser-active color centers are described. The three categories of laser-active color centers in the alkali halides, which are F(A)(II), F2(+), and T1(0)(1), are examined. The storage and grain medium of CW-color-center lasers and CW dye lasers are compared. The development of a soliton laser based on a mode-locked-color-center laser with a length of fiber in its feedback loop is analyzed. The color-center lasers are applicable for high resolution molecular spectroscopy.
