A direction for advanced launch vehicles
Abstract
It is pointed out that the present space transportation systems have evolved along the lines of minimum cost based on relatively near-term technology. However, in a reexamination of the employed method, it is found that the approaches used are no longer low-cost from the standpoint of routine, high traffic, volume demanded by commercial enterprises. For the future, a totally reusable system designed for long-range economics is needed, taking into account simple operation and maintenance, and the elimination of costly expendable elements. In the present paper, the requirements for the new system are examined, and suggestions are made regarding a future launch system concept which will meet the challenges. Attention is given to historical perspectives, current systems, future prospects, the propulsion system, the dual-expander engine concept, and vehicle concepts.
