Solar radiophysics : studies of emission from the sun at metre wavelengths
Abstract
Observational and theoretical aspects of solar astronomy at meter wavelengths are discussed in depth, with emphasis on contributions made by scientists working at the Culgoora solar observatory. Presented in a textbook form, attention is devoted to phenomena in the solar atmosphere and solar flares and to instrumentation previously, currently, and soon to be used to enlarge the database on solar radio emissions. An introduction to plasma wave theory is provided, along with a summary of known properties of coronal radio emissions. Theoretical investigations are carried out of RF emission mechanisms such as bremsstrahlung and gyrosynchrotron processes. Finally, the propagation of radio waves in the corona is considered, as are waves in electron streams and characteristics of the quiet sun.
