Interpolative centroiding in CCD-based image photon counting systems
Abstract
An improved interpolative centroiding technique is presented which can increase the resolution of a CCD-based image photon counting system to several times the number of CCD pixels. This is achieved by utilizing the analog profile of each photon event to determine an accurate position for the centeroid. In the case of a microchannel plate (MCP) intensifier system, the system's practical resolution limit may well be determined by the MCP channel spacing. Results of computer simulations are presented along with a description of an implementation of the interpolative centroiding scheme.
