Behaviour of the vortex layer generated in the flow by an impulse change of circulation around a profile
Abstract
Results of visualization studies of vortex-layer shedding from a symmetrical Joukovsky profile into a parallel flow of Reynolds number 8,000 due to a sudden change of circulation following rotation by a small angle are presented. Evolution, formation of a coherent structure, and dissipation of the layer are visualized using the smoke-wire technique. The reason for the short-lived intensification of the path behind the trailing vortex is discussed. Some quantitative considerations regarding the velocity and circulation of the vortex are presented.
